What is Sleep Apnea
Sleep Apnea is a condition that has been linked to numerous injuries and even sudden death. Apnea is Greek for "without breath" where the tongue is completely sucked against the back of the throat and blocks breathing. The person suffering from this will gasp and force the tongue away form the back of the throat to open the airway. Oxygen flow to the brain is restricted, and the sufferer is put at risk for potentially life-threatening health problems. After the drop in oxygen that occurs during sleep apnea, the body's restoration of that oxygen causes the release of enormous numbers of free radicals into the system. If the sleep apnea is left untreated you are 4 times more likely to suffer from a stroke, and 3 times more likely to contract heart disease.
Treatment For Sleep Apnea
By far, the most common form of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea, where the throat relaxes to the point where breathing can become restricted. Dr. Holly Nadji specializes in oral appliance therapy, a treatment where a patient is custom-fitted with comfortable oral appliance that resembles a sports mouth guard or an orthodontic retainer which is worn at night to hold your jaw forward during sleep, optimizing air flow through your nose and mouth. This is a proven, safe, affordable and effective way to eliminate troublesome snoring and avoid the long-term damage that sleep loss can cause such as weight-gain, high blood-pressure, muscle pain, memory problems and cardiovascular disease.
